The way of salvation brings redemption, atonement, and remission of sin; whereby reconciliation is made complete for mankind's relationship with God. These truths are shown within the scriptures. They have been made available here and in the printable PDF. Though not exhaustive, the scriptures presented will greatly increase one's understanding of reconciliation by way of salvation.
The Way of Salvation
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life:
no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
John 14:6 KJV
By God's grace, Jesus made the way of salvation with atonement, cleansing, propitiation, redemption, and remission. Each word is defined below by their main Hebrew and Greek root meaning.
Atonement
Definition of Atonement
(most prevalent)
Strong’s Hebrew 3722 - כָּפַר kâphar; a primitive root; to cover (specifically with bitumen); figuratively to expiate or condone, to placate or cancel
Strong’s Greek 2643 - καταλλαγή katallagē; from 2644; exchange (figuratively adjustment), i.e. restoration to (the divine) favor
Leviticus 17:11 KJV - "For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul."
Romans 5:11 KJV - "And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement."
Our sins are placed upon the life that dies in our place. This is the exchange that Jesus made.
Cleanse
Definition of Cleanse
(most prevalent)
Strong’s Hebrew 2891 - טָהֵר ṭâhêr; a primitive root; properly to be bright; i.e. (by implication) to be pure (physically sound, clear, unadulterated; Levitically uncontaminated; morally innocent or holy)
Strong’s Greek 2511 - καθαρίζω katharizō; from 2513; to cleanse (literally or figuratively)
Leviticus 16:30 KJV - "For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD."
1 John 1:9 KJV - "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
The atonement of Jesus made us clean before God.
Propitiation
Definition of Propitiation
(only in Greek)
Strong’s Greek 2434 - ἱλασμός hilasmǒs; atonement, i.e. (concretely) an expiator
Strong’s Greek 2435 - ἱλαστήριον hilastēriǒn; neuter of a derivative of 2433; an expiatory (place or thing), i.e. (concretely) an atoning victim, or (specially) the lid of the Ark (in the Temple)
1 John 2:2 KJV - "And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world."
1 John 1:9 KJV - "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
The propitiation is the life that is used in the exchange; also referred to as the sacrifice. The shed blood of the life of Jesus Christ is the atonement that makes us clean from our sins before God.
Redemption
Definition of Redemption
(most prevalent)
Strong’s Hebrew 1353 - גְּאֻלָּה gᵉullâh; feminine passive participle of 1350; redemption (including the right and the object); by implication relationship
Strong’s Greek 629 - ἀπολύτρωσις apǒlutrōsis; from a compound of 575 and 3083; (the act) ransom in full, i.e. (figuratively) riddance, or (specially) Christian salvation
Romans 3:24 KJV - “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:"
Colossians 1:14 KJV - "In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:"
Ephesians 1:7 KJV - "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;"
Redemption occurs when there is an exchange in payment for the one being redeemed. A sinner in the bondage of sin, may be redeemed according to the value of a life: One life freed for a more valuable life given. Since the wages of sin is death, the life given must also die to redeem a sinner.
Remission
Definition of Remission
(only in Greek)
Strong’s Greek 859 - ἄφεσις aphěsis; from 863; freedom; (figuratively) pardon
Strong’s Greek 3929 - πάρεσις parěsis; from 3935; pretermission, i.e. toleration
Hebrews 9:22 KJV - "And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission."
Acts 10:43 KJV - "To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins."
Romans 3:24–25 KJV - “24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;"
Remission is the pardoning of someone from what is owed. Remission of sins comes as a result of atonement and redemption. When a sinner is redeemed and atoned for, they are forgiven and set free from the penalty of sin.
When Jesus Christ died on the cross for us sinners, he made atonement by exchanging our life for his. Being sinless, he bore our sins and shed his own pure blood to cleanse us of unrighteousness. His death paid our penalty which redeemed us; and by his righteousness and free gift, we are able to put our faith in him to receive remission of sins: wherein we are fully pardoned of God and declared to be justified and made righteous by his grace.
The Way Which Makes Reconciliation
By the Grace of God, by the way of salvation, we can have peace with God and an abundantly blessed eternal life with him. Reconciliation is defined below by root meanings in both Hebrew and Greek.
Reconciliation
Definition of Reconcile or Reconciliation
(most prevalent)
Strong’s Hebrew 3722 - כָּפַר kâphar; a primitive root; to cover (specifically with bitumen); figuratively to expiate or condone, to placate or cancel
Strong’s Hebrew 7521 - רָצָה râtsâh; a primitive root; to be pleased with; specially to satisfy a debt
Strong’s Greek 604 - ἀποκαταλλάσσω apǒkatallassō; from 575 and 2664; to reconcile fully
Strong’s Greek 2643 - καταλλαγή katallagḗ; from 2644; exchange (figuratively, adjustment), i.e. restoration to (the divine) favor
Romans 5:10 KJV - "For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life:"
2 Corinthians 5:18-19 KJV - "And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation."
Ephesians 2:13-16 KJV -"But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:"
Colossians 1:20-21 KJV - "And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled"
Hebrews 2:17 KJV - "Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people."
Reconcile or reconciliation is the act of settling differences and restoring peace. Sin and debt separates the sinner from God. When the debt is paid, a relationship of peace is restored.
Reconciliation in the Old Testament (Leviticus 6:30, 8:14-15, 2 Chronicles 29:23-24, Ezekiel 45:15, 17, 20, Daniel 9:24)
"And no sin offering, whereof any of the blood is brought into the tabernacle of the congregation to reconcile withal in the holy place, shall be eaten: it shall be burnt in the fire." Leviticus 6:30 KJV
"And he brought the bullock for the sin offering: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the bullock for the sin offering. And he slew it; and Moses took the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about with his finger, and purified the altar, and poured the blood at the bottom of the altar, and sanctified it, to make reconciliation upon it." Leviticus 8:14-15 KJV
"And they brought forth the he goats for the sin offering before the king and the congregation; and they laid their hands upon them: And the priests killed them, and they made reconciliation with their blood upon the altar, to make an atonement for all Israel: for the king commanded that the burnt offering and the sin offering should be made for all Israel." 2 Chronicles 29:23-24 KJV
"And one lamb out of the flock, out of two hundred, out of the fat pastures of Israel; for a meat offering, and for a burnt offering, and for peace offerings, to make reconciliation for them, saith the Lord GOD." Ezekiel 45:15 KJV
"17 And it shall be the prince's part to give burnt offerings, and meat offerings, and drink offerings, in the feasts, and in the new moons, and in the sabbaths, in all solemnities of the house of Israel: he shall prepare the sin offering, and the meat offering, and the burnt offering, and the peace offerings, to make reconciliation for the house of Israel. ...20 And so thou shalt do the seventh day of the month for every one that erreth, and for him that is simple: so shall ye reconcile the house."
Ezekiel 45:17, 20 KJV
"Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy." Daniel 9:24 KJV
The Gift of Reconciliation
Since the wages of sin is death, payment for sin must be made; either by ourselves with eternal separation and eternal death or by the gracious substitutionary gift God gave through Jesus Christ. Love, longsuffering, and mercy are also seen as God waits for sinners to humble themselves in Faith.
