Paschal Lamb Fulfillment
Introduction
Next in the series of Harvests & Celebrations studies is Pesach/Passover - Paschal Lamb Fulfillment. The study of Paschal Lamb Fulfillment sheds light on how Christ spiritually fulfilled the requirements to be the acceptable sin sacrifice.
Signs of the Times
One of the appointments that God required his people to keep was the Passover; known to many as Pesach. Recall that the ecclesiastical year began with the sighting of the first visible crescent of the new moon after the barley crops have nearly reached the stage of Abib.
Numbers 9:2-3 KJV - "2 Let the children of Israel also keep the passover at his appointed season. 3 In the fourteenth day of this month, at even, ye shall keep it in his appointed season: according to all the rites of it, and according to all the ceremonies thereof, shall ye keep it."
Day of Preparation
Once the Sanhedrin observed the first crescent following the new moon and declared it to be the first of Nissan, God’s people began to prepare for the annual holy day wherein they call to remembrance their slavery and exile from Egypt. On the tenth day of the month, the man of each house was to take an unblemished first born male lamb and keep it until, and kill it in the evening on the fourteenth day of the month.
Exodus 12:3, 5-6 KJV - "3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:... 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: 6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening."
If the size of the lamb was more than sufficient to consume in one meal, it was to be shared with neighbors.
Exodus 12:4 KJV - "And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.
To some this was similar to that of a house pet. Life was precious even in the life of an animal and this was a heartbreaking sacrifice. For others, scripture shows that sacrifice became common and led to hardened hearts and meaningless rituals.
Isaiah 1:11-13 KJV -"11To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats. 12 When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?13Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting."
This sacrifice was made for the atonement of sin. Without the atonement for sin, sin would have to otherwise be punished by death. God’s chosen people would not have been exempt. The blood was a seal of protection in that when the wrath of God was released, the homes that were sealed would keep those within them safe from harm.
Exodus 12:13 KJV - "And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt."
After killing the Passover lamb, the blood of the lamb was used to cover the door posts of their home.
Exodus 12:7 KJV - "And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it."
While in their homes that evening, God’s people ate the Passover meal that had just been prepared.
Exodus 12:8-9 KJV - "8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. 9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.
This fellowship meal was a perpetual observance given for the remembrance of God’s redemption of his people.
Exodus 12:24-25 KJV - "24 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever. 25 And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service."
1 Corinthians 5:8 KJV - "Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth."
The sacrifice of the paschal lamb was the highest focal point of the holy days in Nisan. The sacrifice immediately preceded the start of the Feast of Unleavened bread and was also to be offered up as a burnt offering with the sheaf of firstfruits.
Leviticus 23:12 KJV - "And ye shall offer that day when ye wave the sheaf an he lamb without blemish of the first year for a burnt offering unto the LORD."
When the Levitical priesthood was established, the man of the family would bring the lamb to the high priest, who would perform the sacrifice ritual and then give the lamb back to the family.
Christ the Passover Lamb
Each of these ceremonial commands that preceded the Passover feast were a shadow of what God planned to fulfill in his appointed time with the life of Christ.
The following table shows how Christ fulfilled each requirement to be the substitutionary sacrificial paschal lamb.

The Old Testament Ordinance scriptures show the commandment and requirements. The Old Testament Prophecy scriptures show the prophecy of fulfillment. The New Testament Fulfillment scriptures show exactly how Christ fulfilled them.
