Mankind’s morals, standards, and practice of correction have varied across the span of many ages and throughout a widespread diversity of cultures. Understanding correction as God has revealed in scripture will help today’s followers gain the right perception to exercise correction acceptably and effectually.

Methods & Components of Correction

Scripture reveals several methods and components of correction. Each method varies in application and severity. Methods of correction aim to bring awareness and cessation of sins. These include admonishment, reproof, and rebuke. Components of correction are paired with methods and aim to bring about a change in direction. These include exhortation, provocation, and contending, physical chastisement, shaming and pricking. Definitions and examples are as follows:

Admonishment (Method)

Admonishment is revealed in scripture as a method of correction. Admonishment is used to bring awareness of looming physical or spiritual harm to another and is conveyed by reminding and advising another to make wise or obedient decisions. Definitions and examples of admonishment from scripture are as follows:

  • Strong’s Hebrew 2094 - זָהַר zâhar; a primitive root; to gleam; figuratively, to enlighten (by caution)

  • Strong’s Hebrew 5749 - עוּד ʻûwd; a primitive root; to duplicate or repeat; by implication, to protest, testify (as by reiteration); intensively, to encompass, restore (as a sort of reduplication)

  • Strong’s Greek 3559 - νουθεσία nǒuthěsía; from 3563 and a derivative of 5087; calling attention to, i.e. (by implication) mild rebuke or warning

  • Strong’s Greek 3560 - νουθετέω nǒuthětéō; from the same as 3559; to put in mind, i.e. (by implication) to caution or reprove gently

  • Strong’s Greek 3867 - παραινέω parainěō; from 3844 and 134; to mispraise, i.e. recommend or advise (a different course)

  • Strong’s Greek 5537 - χρηματίζω chrēmatízō; from 5536; to utter an oracle (compare the original sense of 5530), i.e. divinely intimate; by implication, (compare the secular sense of 5532) to constitute a firm for business, i.e. (generally) bear as a title:—be called, be admonished (warned) of God, reveal, speak.

  • Gesenius Hebrew Lexicon (zâhar): "to cause to shine, to make light, i.e. metaphorically, a) to enlighten, to teach …b) to admonish, to warn, sc (namely) to beware of any thingto desist from any thingto warn from any thing ...to warn the wicked from his evil way, to admonish him to turn from it. warn thou them from me, i.e. in my name, by my authority.

  • Gesenius Hebrew Lexicon (ʻûwd): "Specifically to say again and again; hence to affirm and specifically to testify, to exhort. …6. b) to exhort solemnly, to admonish

  • Thayer's Greek Lexicon (nǒuthěsía): "admonition, exhortation ...[1 Corinthians 10:11]"

  • Thayer's Greek Lexicon (nǒuthětéō): "literally, ‘put to mind’ to admonish, warn, exhort"

  • Thayer's Greek Lexicon (parainěō): "to exhort, admonish ...followed by direct discourse"

  • Thayer's Greek Lexicon (chrēmatízō): "to be divinely commanded, admonished, instructed ...warned of God ...to be the mouthpiece of divine revelations, to promulge the commands of God ...[Hebrews 12:25] ...warned"

Ecclesiastes 12:12 KJV - "And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh."

Jeremiah 42:19 KJV - "The LORD hath said concerning you, O ye remnant of Judah; Go ye not into Egypt: know certainly that I have admonished you this day." (See Jeremiah 42:9-42:19)

Acts 27:9-10 KJV – “9 Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them, 10 And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.

Hebrews 8:5 KJV - "Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount."

1 Corinthians 4:14 KJV - "I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you."

1 Corinthians 10:11 KJV - "Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come."

Reproof Method

Reproof is revealed in scripture as a method of correction. It is an adjudgment wherein another's deeds are judged to be wrong. Reproof is used to reveal another's faults and sins and often names the fault or sin by name, as identified in scripture. Reproof is conveyed as a reprimand and can be mild, moderate, or severe in deliverance.  A few definitions and examples of reproof from scripture are as follows:

  • Strong’s Hebrew 3198 - יָכַח yâkach; a primitive root; to be right (i.e. correct); reciprocal, to argue; causatively, to decide, justify or convict

  • Strong’s Greek 1650 - ἔλεγχος ělěnchos; from 1651; proof, conviction

  • Strong’s Greek 1651 - ἐλέγχω ělěnchō; of uncertain affinity; to confute, admonish

  • Gesenius Hebrew Lexicon (yâkach): "to be confuted, convicted. [Genesis 20:16] …To set right one another; i.e. to argue or reason together, to dispute with any one"

  • Thayer's Greek Lexicon (ělěnchō): "to find fault with, correct; a. by word; to reprehend severely, chide, admonish, reprove ...[Luke 3:19]; contextually, to call to account, show one his fault, demand an explanation: ...from someone"

Genesis 20:16 KJV - "And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved."

1 Chronicles 16:21-22 KJV - "21 He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes, 22 Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm." (see 1 Chronicles 16:21-36)

Job 33:8-13 KJV - "8 Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying, 9 I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. 10 Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy, 11 He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths. 12 Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man. 13 Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters."

(Elihu's Reproof to Job, Eliphaz, Bildad, Zophar)

Job 32:4-22 KJV - "4 Now Elihu had waited till Job had spoken, because they were elder than he. 5 When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was kindled. 6 And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and durst not shew you mine opinion. 7 I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom. 8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding. 9 Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment. 10 Therefore I said, Hearken to me; I also will shew mine opinion. 11 Behold, I waited for your words; I gave ear to your reasons, whilst ye searched out what to say. 12 Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words: 13 Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusteth him down, not man. 14 Now he hath not directed his words against me: neither will I answer him with your speeches. 15 They were amazed, they answered no more: they left off speaking. 16 When I had waited, (for they spake not, but stood still, and answered no more;) 17 I said, I will answer also my part, I also will shew mine opinion. 18 For I am full of matter, the spirit within me constraineth me. 19 Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles. 20 I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I will open my lips and answer. 21 Let me not, I pray you, accept any man's person, neither let me give flattering titles unto man. 22 For I know not to give flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away."

Job 33:1-33 KJV - "1 Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words. 2 Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth. 3 My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly. 4 The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. 5 If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up. 6 Behold, I am according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed out of the clay. 7 Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee. 8 Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying, 9 I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. 10 Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy, 11 He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths. 12 Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man. 13 Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters. 14 For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. 15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; 16 Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, 17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. 18 He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword. 19 He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain: 20 So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat. 21 His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out. 22 Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers. 23 If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness: 24 Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. 25 His flesh shall be fresher than a child's: he shall return to the days of his youth: 26 He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness. 27 He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; 28 He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light. 29 Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man, 30 To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living. 31 Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I will speak. 32 If thou hast any thing to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify thee. 33 If not, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I shall teach thee wisdom."

Job 34:1-37 KJV - "1 Furthermore Elihu answered and said, 2 Hear my words, O ye wise men; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge. 3 For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat. 4 Let us choose to us judgment: let us know among ourselves what is good. 5 For Job hath said, I am righteous: and God hath taken away my judgment. 6 Should I lie against my right? my wound is incurable without transgression. 7 What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water? 8 Which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men. 9 For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God. 10 Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity. 11 For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways. 12 Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment. 13 Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed the whole world? 14 If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath; 15 All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust. 16 If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words. 17 Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just? 18 Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly? 19 How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands. 20 In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand. 21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings. 22 There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves. 23 For he will not lay upon man more than right; that he should enter into judgment with God. 24 He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their stead. 25 Therefore he knoweth their works, and he overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed. 26 He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others; 27 Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways: 28 So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted. 29 When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only: 30 That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared. 31 Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more: 32 That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more. 33 Should it be according to thy mind? he will recompense it, whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I: therefore speak what thou knowest. 34 Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken unto me. 35 Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom. 36 My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because of his answers for wicked men. 37 For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God."

Job 35:1-16 KJV - "1 Elihu spake moreover, and said, 2 Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righteousness is more than God's? 3 For thou saidst, What advantage will it be unto thee? and, What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my sin? 4 I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee. 5 Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou. 6 If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him? 7 If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand? 8 Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art; and thy righteousness may profit the son of man. 9 By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty. 10 But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night; 11 Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven? 12 There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men. 13 Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it. 14 Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him. 15 But now, because it is not so, he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth it not in great extremity: 16 Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge."

Job 36:1-33 KJV - "1 Elihu also proceeded, and said, 2 Suffer me a little, and I will shew thee that I have yet to speak on God's behalf. 3 I will fetch my knowledge from afar, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker. 4 For truly my words shall not be false: he that is perfect in knowledge is with thee. 5 Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom. 6 He preserveth not the life of the wicked: but giveth right to the poor. 7 He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous: but with kings are they on the throne; yea, he doth establish them for ever, and they are exalted. 8 And if they be bound in fetters, and be holden in cords of affliction; 9 Then he sheweth them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded. 10 He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity. 11 If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures. 12 But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge. 13 But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath: they cry not when he bindeth them. 14 They die in youth, and their life is among the unclean. 15 He delivereth the poor in his affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression. 16 Even so would he have removed thee out of the strait into a broad place, where there is no straitness; and that which should be set on thy table should be full of fatness. 17 But thou hast fulfilled the judgment of the wicked: judgment and justice take hold on thee. 18 Because there is wrath, beware lest he take thee away with his stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver thee. 19 Will he esteem thy riches? no, not gold, nor all the forces of strength. 20 Desire not the night, when people are cut off in their place. 21 Take heed, regard not iniquity: for this hast thou chosen rather than affliction. 22 Behold, God exalteth by his power: who teacheth like him? 23 Who hath enjoined him his way? or who can say, Thou hast wrought iniquity? 24 Remember that thou magnify his work, which men behold. 25 Every man may see it; man may behold it afar off. 26 Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out. 27 For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof: 28 Which the clouds do drop and distil upon man abundantly. 29 Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle? 30 Behold, he spreadeth his light upon it, and covereth the bottom of the sea. 31 For by them judgeth he the people; he giveth meat in abundance. 32 With clouds he covereth the light; and commandeth it not to shine by the cloud that cometh betwixt. 33 The noise thereof sheweth concerning it, the cattle also concerning the vapour."

Job 37:1-24 KJV - "1 At this also my heart trembleth, and is moved out of his place. 2 Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goeth out of his mouth. 3 He directeth it under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth. 4 After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with the voice of his excellency; and he will not stay them when his voice is heard. 5 God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend. 6 For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength. 7 He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work. 8 Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places. 9 Out of the south cometh the whirlwind: and cold out of the north. 10 By the breath of God frost is given: and the breadth of the waters is straitened. 11 Also by watering he wearieth the thick cloud: he scattereth his bright cloud: 12 And it is turned round about by his counsels: that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them upon the face of the world in the earth. 13 He causeth it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy. 14 Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God. 15 Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to shine? 16 Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge? 17 How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind? 18 Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass? 19 Teach us what we shall say unto him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness. 20 Shall it be told him that I speak? if a man speak, surely he shall be swallowed up. 21 And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds: but the wind passeth, and cleanseth them. 22 Fair weather cometh out of the north: with God is terrible majesty. 23 Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict. 24 Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart."

Luke 3:19 KJV - "But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done," ... (with Mark 6:18)

Mark 6:18 KJV - "For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife."

2 Corinthians 13:2, 10 KJV - "2 I told you before, and foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which heretofore have sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not spare: ... 10 Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction." (see 1 Corinthians 13:2-10)

Rebuke Method

Rebuke is revealed in scripture as a method of correction. Rebuke is also an adjudgment wherein another's deeds are judged to be wrong. Rebuke is used to reveal another's sins and often names the sins, as identified in scripture. Rebuke is conveyed as a reprimand and is sharp and severe in deliverance. A rebuke charges another to cease from their sinful deeds. A few definitions and examples of rebuke from scripture are as follows:

  • Strong’s Hebrew 1605 - גָּעַר gâʻar; a primitive root; to chide

  • Strong’s Hebrew 7378 -רִיב rîyb; or רוּב rûwb; a primitive root; properly, to toss, i.e. grapple; mostly figuratively, to wrangle, i.e. hold a controversy; (by implication) to defend

  • Strong’s Greek 1649 - ἔλεγξις ělěgxis; from 1651; refutation, i.e. reproof:—rebuke

  • Strong’s Greek 1651 - ἐλέγχω ělěnchō; of uncertain affinity; to confute, admonish

  • Strong’s Greek 1969 - ἐπιπλήσσω ěpiplēssō; from 1909 and 4141; to chastise, i.e. (with words) to upbraid

  • Strong’s Greek 2008 - ἐπιτιμάω ěpitimaō; from 1909 and 5091; to tax upon, i.e. censure or admonish; by implication, forbid:—(straitly) charge, rebuke

  • Gesenius Hebrew Lexicon (gâʻar): "to rebuke, to reprove, to chide, e.g as a father his son …[Genesis 37:10]"

  • Gesenius Hebrew Lexicon (rîyb): "to contend, to strive, to quarrel."

  • Thayer's Greek Lexicon (ěpitimaō):  "to tax with fault, rate, chide, rebuke, reprove, censure severely ...charge one with wrong …[Luke 23:40] ... to rebuke — in order to curb one's ferocity or violence (hence, many formerly gave the word the meaning to restrain …[Mark 4:39] ...followed by …(with a verb expressing the opposite of what is censured) …with the addition of …direct discourse: [Mark 1:25] …Elsewhere in a milder sense, to admonish or charge sharply …[Matthew 16:22]"

Genesis 37:10 KJV - "And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?"

Nehemiah 5:7-8 KJV - "7 Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them. 8 And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer."

Hosea 5:2 KJV - "And the revolters are profound to make slaughter, though I have been a rebuker of them all."

Matthew 11:20-24 KJV - "20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: 21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. 23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee."

Mark 1:25 KJV - "And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him." (also Luke 4:35)

Mark 8:32-33 KJV - "32 And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men." (also Matthew 16:22-23)

Mark 9:25 KJV - "When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him." (also Luke 9:42)

Luke 9:54-56 KJV - "54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? 55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. 56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village."

Luke 23:39-41 KJV - "39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. 40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss."

John 2:13, 15-17 KJV - "13 And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, ... 15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; 16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise. 17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up."

2 Peter 2:16 KJV - "But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness of the prophet." (see Numbers 22:21-30)

Manifesting Light Method

Light brings knowledge and awareness through illuminating the unseen. Speaking truth and knowledge to bring awareness of righteousness is one way of shining light; to live a life exemplifying godly behavior is another way. Manifesting light is a method of correction and also accompanies reproof and provocation. A few definitions and examples of manifesting light from scripture are as follows:

  • Strong’s Greek 5457 - φῶς phōs; from an obsolete φάω phaō (to shine or make manifest, especially by rays; compare 5316, 5346); luminousness (in the widest application, natural or artificial, abstract or concrete, literal or figurative)

Thayer’s Greek Lexicon (phōs) – “used to denote truth and its knowledge, together with the spiritual purity congruous with it …is used of one in whom wisdom and spiritual purity shine forth, and who imparts the same to others"

John 3:19-21 KJV - "19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God."

Ephesians 5:13 KJV - "But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light."

Prophesying Method

Prophesying is the foretelling of something to come. As a method of correction, prophesying specifically utilizes the word of God, especially the written word of God, to enlighten another with knowledge of sin, warning of impending destruction, warning of judgment to come, knowledge of righteousness, and persuasion of God's promises and rewards to come. Prophesying compels another to repent, to do good works, and to continue following God. A few definitions and examples of prophesying from scripture are as follows:

Physical chastisement is a component of correction; wherein an unpleasant and painful experience motivates a person to abstain from a sin. Historically, physical chastisement was regularly used in correction. Physical chastisement included plagues and smiting. By the first century Jesus took upon himself the chastisement of his people. Plucking out hair, spitting on, placing in public stocks, hanging on a tree or cross, and humiliating speech, are all avenues in which a person was put to shame. The unpleasant sensation of shame motivated a person to repent and do right. Onlookers of those who were made ashamed were provoked to take heed and keep from sin. Pricking (Subcomponent)

Pricking is an act that causes another to feel sorrow or grief. Pricking can be verbal or nonverbal and can be physical, but always results in a psychological impact. An ungodly pricking is conveyed advertently with the intention of manipulating or hurting another. As a subcomponent of correction, pricking is not the aim but a consequential result. Sorrow and grief can lead to edification, however, too much can be destructive. A godly sorrow is also known as remorse, and compels someone to repent. A few definitions and examples from scripture are as follows:

A few definitions for prick:

  • Thayer's Greek Lexicon (lupěō): "to make sorrowful; to affect with sadness, cause grief; to throw into sorrow ...in a manner acceptable to God"

Acts 2:37 KJV - "Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?"

Acts 9:5-6 KJV - "5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do."

Psalm 38:3-4, 17-18 KJV - "3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. 4 For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ... 17 For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me. 18 For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin."

Mark 10:21-22 KJV - "Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. 22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions."

John 21:15-17 KJV - "15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. 16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. 17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep."

2 Corinthians 2:2-4 KJV - "2 For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me? 3 And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all. 4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you."

2 Corinthians 2:6-7 KJV - "6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. 7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow."

In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter."
