Idiom: Non-literal expressions created and used within one's culture (i.e. “slept” = died)
Analogy: A comparison based on similarities (i.e. “his tree shall flourish” = “he will be prosperous”)
Allegory: Expressions and meaning described using symbolism (i.e. “seven golden candlesticks” = “the seven churches”)
Metaphor: Words or phrases used outside of their original meaning to describe something else. (i.e. the leaven of the Pharisees" = "the doctrine of the Pharisees"
Parable: Stories used outside of their original meaning to describe something else. (i.e. See Matthew 24:32)
Allegories, metaphors, and parables are figures of speech.
