Baptism of repentance commences a new life spiritually and devoutly. These truths are shown within the scriptures. They are available here and in the interactive printable PDF. Though not exhaustive, the scriptures presented will greatly increase one's understanding of the baptism of repentance and a resurrection to new life.

Introduction to Repentance

By God's grace, mankind is privileged and called to repentance. Repentance, repent, and turn are defined below by their main root Hebrew and Greek meaning.

Repentance

Definition of Repentance

(most prevalent)

  • Strong’s Hebrew 5164 - נֹחַם nôcham; from 5162; ruefulness, i.e. desistance

  • Strong’s Greek 3341 - μετάνοια mětanǒia; from 3340; (subjectively) compunction (for guilt, including reformation); by implication, reversal (of [another's] decision)

Definition of Repent

(most prevalent)

  • Strong’s Hebrew 7725 – שׁוּב shûwb; a primitive root; to turn back (hence, away) transitively or intransitively, literally or figuratively (not necessarily with the idea of return to the starting point); generally to retreat; often adverbially again (also rendered "turn" in Joel 2:13)

  • Strong’s Greek 3340 - μετανοέω mětanǒěō; from 3326 and 3539; to think differently or afterwards, i.e. reconsider (morally, feel compunction)

Definition of Turn

(Acts 14:15)

  • Strong’s Greek 1994 - ἐπιστρέφω ěpistrěphō; from 1909 and 4762; to revert (literally, figuratively or morally)

Acts 11:18 KJV - “When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.”

Luke 15:7 KJV - “I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.”

Joel 2:13 KJV - "And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil."

Acts 14:15 KJV - "And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:"

Repentance is a stopping and turning away from one direction and beginning towards another. Godly repentance is accepting God's truth, along with, feeling sorrow, guilt, shame or regret for one's own moral thoughts, desires, and actions, and turning to seek God's way.

Faith Towards God

Repenting towards God is to put faith in him. Faith in God acknowledges that everything he declares is truth; including the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Faith ascribes authority to God over the way of life. Repentance towards God includes a willing desire to seek and follow him and is shown outwardly. The following scriptures portray evidence of repentance:

Psalm 32:5-6 KJV - "5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah. 6 For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him."

Philippians 2:10-11 KJV - "10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

Hebrews 11:1 KJV - "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

Hebrews 11:8-10 KJV - "8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God."

Hebrews 11:13-16 KJV - "13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. 15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. 16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city."

Luke 7:29-30 KJV - "29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him."

God gives forgiveness and remission of sins for godly repentance.

Acts 8:22 KJV - Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.”

Mark 1:4 KJV - “John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins."

Acts 2:38 KJV - "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

Acts 3:19 KJV - Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;” (See also 1 Kings 8:47-50)

2 Corinthians 7:9-10 KJV - "9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. 10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death."

Introduction to Water Baptism

Mankind is called to partake in a ceremonial baptism that is ordained by God. Baptism is defined below by the main root Hebrew and Greek meaning.

Baptism

Definition of Baptism

(only in Greek; most prevalent)

  • Strong’s Greek 907 - βαπτίζω baptízō; from a derivative of 911; to make whelmed (i.e. fully wet); used only (in the New Testament) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of Christian baptism

  • Strong’s Greek 908 - βάπτισμα baptisma; from 907; baptism (technically or figuratively)

  • Strong’s Greek 909 - βαπτισμός baptismǒs; from 907; ablution (ceremonial or Christian)

Ephesians 4:4-5 KJV - "4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,"

Matthew 3:11 KJV - "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:"

Baptism is an ordinance of ablution: washing oneself in water, as well as, a ceremony for spiritual purification. Baptizing is that act of immersing in water with intent to soak the entire body.

Historically, a baptism was known to wash away filth physically, yet, its spiritual meaning to wash away sin was the focus and purpose. Spiritually washing away sin through baptism was and is an act of a personal devotion: sanctifying oneself to God, putting off the old ways of sin, and starting a commitment to a new way of life. (See "Mikveh & Baptism" for a more detailed study.)

Water is a mode of transportation that carries something away. The symbolism of separation is also similar to that of Tashlikh in Judaism. Tashlikh, meaning "cast off", is a tradition in which pieces of bread or small rocks are thrown into and carried away by the water; representing a person’s sins being cast off.

Acts 22:16 KJV - "And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord."

Romans 6:3-7, 9-12 KJV - "3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?... 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. ... 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof."

Ephesians 5:26 KJV - "That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word," (See also John 15:3)

The one baptized is giving a good conscience response to God's command to repent; making baptism an act of repentance which puts the new believer in favor of God's gracious gift of salvation.

1 Peter 3:20-21 KJV - "20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:"

Hebrews 10:22 KJV - "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water."

Matthew 3:5-12 KJV - "5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, 6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: 9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: 12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." (See also Luke 3:8)

Acts 26:20 KJV - "But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance."

Baptism was originally known as "the baptism of repentance" as baptism is the ceremonial demonstration repentance.

Mark 1:4 KJV - "John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins." (also Luke 3:3)

Acts 13:24 KJV - "When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel."

Acts 19:4 KJV - "Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus."

Both baptism and repentance were intended to take place together. The moment someone repented to God, they were to be baptized. There was only a delay when there was no means or ability to do so.

Acts 8:36-38 KJV - "36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him."

Acts 16:31-33 KJV - "31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway."

Acts 9:17-18 KJV - "17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized."

Introduction to Baptism of the Holy Ghost

Before the Lord sent his Holy Ghost, people engaged in repeated physical cleansing. The ordinance of baptism was fulfilled when God sent his Holy Spirit: providing a deep spiritual cleansing and empowerment to the repentant to continue in righteousness.

Mark 1:8 KJV - "I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost." (See also Matthew 3:11, Luke 3:16, John 1:26, 33)

Acts 1:5 KJV - "For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence." (Acts 11:16)

Matthew 3:16, 4:1 KJV - "And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:… 4:1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,"

John 7:39 KJV - "(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)"

Acts 2:38 KJV - "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

Acts 10:44-45, 47 KJV - "44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. ... 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?"

After Jesus Christ's ascension into heaven, people were baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Claiming baptism in the name of mankind was denounced.

Matthew 28:19 KJV - "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:"

Ephesians 4:4-6 KJV - "4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all."

1 Corinthians 1:12-15 KJV - "12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. 13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; 15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name."

Introduction to Baptism of the Holy Ghost

There are prerequisites for baptizing, including receiving God's word, believing that God is just and righteous, confessing sins, believing in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, believing Jesus Christ is the Son of God and is Lord, believing in the resurrection of Jesus Christ and calling upon the name of the Lord. All three areas concerning the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost must be met for a complete baptism.

Receiving God's Word

God's word must be first heard and accepted as truth.

Acts 2:41 KJV - "Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls."

Acts 8:12-13 KJV - "But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done."

Acts 8:14 KJV - "Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:"

Justifying God

It must be believed that God is just and righteous in his assessment of mankind's sinfulness and deserved penalty; opposed to rejecting the counsel of God against them.

Matthew 3:14 KJV - "But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?"

Luke 7:29-30 KJV - "29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him."

2 Timothy 2:25 KJV - “In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;”

Confession of Sins

There must be a confession of sins to God.

Matthew 3:1, 6 KJV - "1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,… 6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins."

Mark 1:5 KJV - "And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins."

Belief in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost

In order to be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, there must be an understanding and belief in all three.

Matthew 28:19 KJV -"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:"

Belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Lord

In order to be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, there must be a belief in his authority as Son of God and Lord.

Acts 8:16 KJV - "(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

Acts 10:48 KJV - "And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days."

Acts 18:8 KJV - "And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized."

Acts 19:4-5 KJV - "4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus."

Matthew 10:32 KJV - "Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven." (See also Luke 12:8)

Romans 10:9 KJV - "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."

Belief in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ

In order to be baptized in the likeness of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, it must be believed that Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

Colossians 2:12 KJV - "Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead."

Romans 10:9 KJV - "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."

Believing in the resurrection of Jesus Christ is also believing in the resurrection of the dead.

1 Corinthians 15:29 KJV - "Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?"

Philippians 3:8-11 KJV - "8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead."

Hebrews 11:17-19 KJV - "17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: 19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure."

Willingness to Continue & Follow

In order to be baptized there must be a willingness to continue in the faith by following God's leading.

Luke 3:12 KJV - "Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?"

Acts 8:13 KJV - "Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done."

Romans 11:22 KJV - "Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off."

Galatians 3:27 KJV - "For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ."

Colossians 1:21-23 KJV - "21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled 22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: 23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;"

1 Timothy 4:16 KJV - "Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee."

Hebrews 6:1 KJV - "Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,"

1 John 2:24 KJV - "Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father."

Complete Triune Baptism

Baptism of repentance must be done with the right understanding and belief; otherwise the baptism isn't complete. Baptism that is not fully understood must be explained and redone as ordained by God.

Acts 19:2-6 KJV -"2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied."

Baptism of repentance must not only be in the name of the Father and the Son, but also in the name of the Holy Ghost. Baptism in water for spiritual cleansing does not need to be redone if the believer was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ; only laying on of the hands to baptize in the name of the Holy Ghost would be needed to complete the baptism.

Acts 8:14-17 KJV -  "12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women... 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: 15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost."

A complete baptism includes repentance towards God which is "in the name of the father", and with cleansing by the blood of Jesus which is "in the name of the Son", the Lord Jesus Christ, and with renewing which is "in the name of the Holy Ghost".

Acts 20:21 KJV - "Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ." (also Hebrews 6:1)

1 John 1:7 KJV - "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."

Revelation 1:5 KJV - "And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood," (also Revelation 7:14)

Titus 3:5 KJV - "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;"

Newness of Life

When someone is baptized unto repentance, they have taken their first steps toward a new way of living. They have been born of the Spirit and have become a new creature, spiritually. The Holy Ghost works to enlighten and renew them.

Regeneration & Renewing

Definition of Regeneration

(only in Greek)

  • Strong’s Greek 3824 - παλιγγενεσία paliggěněsia; from 3825 and 1078; (spiritual) rebirth (the state or the act); i.e. (figuratively) spiritual renovation; specially Messianic restoration

Definition of Renewing

(only in Greek)

  • Strong’s Greek 342 - ἀνακαίνωσις anakainōsis; from 341; renovation

Titus 3:5 KJV - "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;"

Romans 12:2 KJV - "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

Regeneration is a new life through spiritual birth; known as a second form of birth as a human experience ("born again"). New spiritual life is declared by emerging from the water during the baptism of repentance.

Renewing is the redevelopment of one's character; wherein the mind is transformed by the influence and teaching of the Holy Ghost.

Quicken

Definition of Quicken

(only in Greek)

  • Strong’s Hebrew 2421 - חָיָה châyâh; a primitive root [compare 2331, 2421]; to live, whether literally or figuratively; causatively to revive

  • Strong’s Greek 2227 - ζωοποιέω zōǒpǒiěō; from the same as 2226 and 4160; to (re-)vitalize (literally or figuratively

John 3:6-7 KJV - "6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."

Ephesians 2:1 KJV - "And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;"

Quicken is to enliven; wherein one is equipped with the life force to endeavor in what the mind or spirit sets out to do. God's quickening equips believers with the indwelling of the Holy Ghost, which empowers believers to overcome the snares of sin.

John 3:3, 5 KJV - "Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. ... 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God."

Romans 6:4 KJV - "Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."

2 Corinthians 5:14-17 KJV - "14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: 15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. 16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

The Holy Spirit works in the believer to overcome sin and produce good works.

Matthew 28:19-20 KJV - "19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."
